A resounding 10 wicket victory over Southlands CC on Sunday gave OEs Sunday team their first win of the 2018 season. Having been sent to field, OEs opened with the all u15 bowling attack of Sami Noor and Qasim Ahmed. Both bowled threatening spells with excellent control; Qasim picking up a wicket that would have come earlier if his captain could hold a catch. They were ably supported by the introduction of Eddie Hildebrand, who bowled his 8 overs with constant control and threat. Southlands batted well and had a batsmen well set for late aggression; a plan thwarted by Busby’s death spell that was brutal to both batsmen and Raj’s hands.
The role of chief aggressor was then passed over to Shaun Gomes. Having spent 40 overs in his father’s shadow in the field, he came into his own with the bat. His 105*, supported by Jav’s unbeaten 44, took the side to comfortable victory.
Gomes had been one of the standout performers of the side’s earlier fixtures. His 88 was the bedrock of an impressive OEs innings that sadly finished with a 37 run defeat to UCS Old Boys. Despite facing strong opposition, the side fielded with outstanding commitment that day and bowled well against skilful batsmen.
The bowlers were not given much chance on what was the Sunday side’s only disappointing game of the season so far; a 9 wicket hammering by Roving Reporters. A strong batting line up gifted too many wickets, falling well short of a total that could be competitive.
The Sunday side welcome Crouch End CC to OEs this week. Fans will be hoping that the colts will continue to excel without Raj’s direct coaching style from behind the stumps. OE's best supported player has, hopefully briefly, succumbed to injury.
