GUNNERSBURY GUNNS WCC AGREE PARTNERSHIP WITH OECC FROM 2022 OECC JUNIOR GIRLS TO ENTER MIDDLESEX LEAGUE FOR THE FIRST TIME

We are delighted to announce a new partnership at Old Elizabethans - with Gunnersbury Gunns WCC!

Some of you may recall the Gunns playing a Ladies Premier League fixture at our ground last summer; they were impressed with our facilities, the welcome they received and to see our young girls in action during the morning in a friendly match and have now signed an agreement to play their home matches at OEs and develop womens and girls cricket in Barnet, North London and Hertfordshire.

Furthermore, in conjunction with Mill Hill Village CC, OEs will be entering a team in the Middlesex Girls League for the first time. We are looking forward to a programme of 10 competitive matches this summer against teams across North London.

Exciting times ahead for womens and girls cricket at the club - we look forward to providing opportunities for players of all ages and standards to learn and play cricket!

See the official press release below:

"Gunnersbury Women’s Cricket Club is thrilled to announce its move back to the north of London for the 2022 season.

Whilst Gunnersbury will continue to operate under its own name and legislation, the women’s section is excited to be working in partnership with Barnet-based Old Elizabethans Cricket Club to help develop and grow women’s cricket in the North London-Hertfordshire corridor.

Gunnersbury Women’s Cricket Club is the only Middlesex-based women’s club that has teams operating in both the WCSL Premier League competition and the Middlesex League. This provides a unique balance of members ranging from a number of ex-internationals, current regional and county players to those who are new to the game.

Old Elizabethans CC Chair, Rob Jones, and Director of Cricket, Nav Parkar have been instrumental in supporting the recent discussions and negotiations, and are both excited about the opportunities this brings the club in the coming season. Nav says ‘Partnering with Gunnersbury WCC was a no-brainer. They offer our girls the opportunity to progress and play for one of the most prestigious women’s clubs in the country, as well as providing a wealth of knowledge and experience at the elite level which can only benefit the club as a whole. Everyone is very excited and committed to making this a successful partnership for years to come. I’d like to personally acknowledge Emma, Beth and Paul’s hard work in getting this over the line.’

Paul Barnfather, whose daughter Elsa is a current member of both Gunns and the Sunrisers Academy, and has played for a number of years at OE’s, endorses the relationship saying, ‘This is a fantastic fit for Old Elizabethans. We’ve certainly grown as a club and now we have the facilities and resources to be able to incorporate a women’s section, which we are very proud of.’

Former England international and World Cup Winner, Beth Morgan hopes that by securing a ground with multiple pitches and outstanding training facilities, new players will continue to be attracted to Gunns. ‘We’ve been incredibly successful throughout our 97-year history, producing many internationals and winning various national titles, so we see this as a really important step to continue our legacy as a leading women’s club in the area’ said Morgan, who still plays an active role in the club.

This is echoed by Emma Bernstein, Gunns Treasurer who says ‘We feel with the support and enthusiasm of Old Elizabethans CC, we are in a great position to support the development of women’s and girl’s cricket in the area and provide a variety of playing opportunities for those new to cricket and those with previous experience.’

Gunnersbury will train and play home matches at Mays Lane in Barnet, EN5 2AG, commencing in April 2022. The club is always keen to welcome new members, no matter what age or experience. Winter training will be running at alternate Sunday from 10-11.30am from Feb 6th at Wren Academy in North Finchley, please do come along (no equipment needed).
